Doug Roberts has been referred to by his former high school coach, John Shaw, as "every coaches dream."

Doug's basketball career is quite impressive. Beginning in 1974, his team went undefeated and was the Class A State Champion. Then in 1976 his team not only went undefeated once again but also captured the Class A State Championship and the New England Championship as well.

While in high school, he received several individual honors: All-State Honorable Mention, 1974; First-Team All-State in 1975 and 1976. He received the George Vinal Award and was named Outstanding Player at the New England Basketball Tournament. Most nights saw him on the court for only about half of the 32 minutes; however, Roberts scored 1,480 points and had 1,000 rebounds in his years at Rumford.

Doug's love for the game of basketball led to a well-traveled collegiate career beginning at Acadia University, where he played for fellow Mainer Dick Hunt, and was part of a Canadian National Championship team. He earned Second-Team All-A.U.A.A, averaging 14 points and 5 assists.

After high school, Roberts attended Acadia University, where he averaged14 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds for the Canadian National Champions, playing for fellow Mainer Dick Hunt.

He then went to Becker Junior College in 1977. His team won 22 games and Doug was elected First-Team All-New England. He was elected to the Becker College Hall of Fame in 1996.

In 1978, Doug enrolled in Clark University. During his time at Clark University, he was part of some very successful teams. He was All-New England in both the 1978-79 and 1979-80 seasons. He was their leading scorer with over 1,000 points in just two years.

With all that basketball experience under his belt, Doug did what most true Mainers did - he returned to his home town of Rumford in 1982. He began his coaching career at Rumford High School and led the Panthers to the Western Maine Class A Tournament.

In 1986, Doug moved to Sanford High School, where his teams won more than 66% of their games with a record of 216-126. His teams made appearances at the Western Maine Tournament every year but one from 2001-06. Roberts was a four-time Coach of the Year in the Southern Maine Activities Association.

Douglas Roberts lives in Springvale with his wife Pam and their two daughters, Mary Louise and Jennifer. In 2010, Jennifer was the recipient of a scholar-athlete award from the Maine Sports Hall of Fame. She recently completed a successful freshman year on the swim team at the University of Maryland, competing in the 100 meter butterfly, 200 meter backstroke, and 200 meter individual medley.
